Assessment Guidelines

"Assessing for learning, not of learning."

Key Concepts for Formative Assessment

Formative assessment:

  • occurs during the learning;
  • involves students in self-assessment and peer assessment;
  • informs the next steps;
  • makes use of the three social studies processes to assess knowledge and understanding: Inquiry, Values Exploration, and Social Decision Making

In formative assessment:

  • learning intentions are visible in each lesson;
  • success criteria are constructed with the learners;
  • feedback is specific and timely and allows students to take action.

For each activity, under the heading What You Look For, you will find indicators from which you can devise specific learning outcomes, based on the learning intention for that activity.

Through a wide range of assessment activities, you can gather sufficient information over time to enable you to identify the progress of individual students in relation to the key understanding(s).
