The Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was established by Dr Truby King to promote the education of mothers in the care and, particularly, feeding of babies. It was supported by the then Governor-General and his wife, Lord and Lady Plunket. The society worked with benefactors and communities to establish Plunket Rooms throughout the country where specially trained nurses could provide advice and assistance to all mothers without direct charge.
