Te Kotahitanga movement sought to secure self-determination for Màori, and to gain legislative recognition of a Màori Parliament, allowing a sharing of authority and full Màori participation in the functions of the state as equal partners with other settlers. In 1897 Màori women achieved the right to vote and stand for election to this parliament, which promoted important debate among Màori though it did not gain statutory recognition.
