This Union was formed to support parish work, especially focusing on the roles of wives and mothers, and spiritual development within the family. Women of other denominations and of different social and economic classes were welcomed. Wives of senior clergy often exercised public leadership, and over the years the Mothers’ Union became a significant training ground for many women. The Union evolved to become the Association of Anglican Women, with wider objectives and responsibilities in church life and decision-making.
