Following a visit in 1885 by a representative of the American Women’s Christian Temperance Union, women in New Zealand were inspired to establish the Union here, and branches grew quickly. While the first priority was control of liquor - and temperance was often interpreted as prohibition - the WCTU took a leading role in promoting votes for women, and was also involved in charitable work, social reform, and supporting family cohesion.
