The foundation of Hukarere - “Flying Foam” - continued the New Zealand missionaries’ practice of promoting the education of girls. It was established by the Anglican Samuel Williams on a site given by his uncle, Bishop William Williams, not far from the bishop’s Napier home. In 1876 there were thirty girls, and in 1877 the buildings had to be enlarged to accommodate sixty.
