Erihāpeti Murchie was born at Arowhenua Pā, Temuka, of Kai Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, and Ngāti Raukawa descent. She trained as a teacher and was active in many areas of the arts, with a particular flair for drama. From 1950, when she played the role of the matriarch, Aroha Mataira, in Bruce Masons ground-breaking play, The Pōhutukawa Tree, she had an active stage and radio career until her involvement with the Māori Womens Welfare League limited her time. As a member of the League she was entrusted with the task of leading the first major study into the health of Māori women. This study broke new ground in concepts and scope, and Erihāpeti Murchies report, Rapuora: Health and the Māori Woman, led to several successful health education campaigns. She was appointed to the Health Research Council and other health bodies, but always remained active in community education, human rights, and the arts.
Erihāpeti Murchie became a Human Rights Commissioner and brought fresh perspectives to all her tasks, especially demonstrating the impact of culture on all areas of life. A woman of immense warmth, compassion, and dignity, she was an inspiring orator who expressed respect for the past, joy in the present, and confidence in the future. |
