Erihàpeti Murchie was born at Arowhenua Pà, Temuka, of Kai Tahu, Kàti Mamoe, and Ngàti Raukawa descent. She trained as a teacher and was active in many areas of the arts, with a particular flair for drama. From 1950, when she played the role of the matriarch, Aroha Mataira, in Bruce Mason’s ground-breaking play, The Pòhutukawa Tree, she had an active stage and radio career until her involvement with the Màori Women’s Welfare League limited her time. As a member of the League she was entrusted with the task of leading the first major study into the health of Màori women. This study broke new ground in concepts and scope, and Erihàpeti Murchie’s report, Rapuora: Health and the Màori Woman, led to several successful health education campaigns. She was appointed to the Health Research Council and other health bodies, but always remained active in community education, human rights, and the arts.

Erihàpeti Murchie became a Human Rights Commissioner and brought fresh perspectives to all her tasks, especially demonstrating the impact of culture on all areas of life. A woman of immense warmth, compassion, and dignity, she was an inspiring orator who expressed respect for the past, joy in the present, and confidence in the future.
