The Ministry was established to improve the status of women and to work towards the achievement of social, political, and economic equality. It was required to provide specialist advice on legislative and other policy matters and undertake education and information programmes. The Ministry has a dedicated unit, Te Ohu Whakatupu, to focus specifically on initiatives for the advancement of Màori women.
