In 1984 the New Zealand Government ratified this Convention, with two reservations regarding paid maternity leave and women in combat. The sixteen Articles of the Convention addressed the need for equity in all areas of social, political, and economic life, with reference to specific groups such as rural women, immigrants, and the elderly. Governments were required to report regularly to the United Nations on progress towards meeting the goals.
