This Act established irreconcilable breakdown of a marriage as the sole ground for divorce, and required counselling and conciliation when an application for separation was filed. A Family Court judge could require a mediation conference, and could not order dissolution until satisfied that arrangements for the custody, maintenance, and welfare of any children were the best that could be devised in the circumstances.
