This Act established a Commission to promote human rights and negotiate in the event of disputes. Discrimination became unlawful on a number of grounds, including sex and marital status, and applied to employment, education, vocational training, industrial unions, professional associations, and housing and accommodation. The Act outlawed discrimination in providing access to public places and access to goods and services, and applied to advertisements as well as the actual practice of discrimination. The Act also allowed exemptions for short-term positive action measures designed to ensure equality, and set up an Equal Opportunities Tribunal to hear appeals and enforce compliance. |
