In this year, the General Synod of the Anglican Church made provision for women to be ordained to the priesthood. Formerly they had been able to serve as deacons only. The decision on ordination of any candidate rested with each bishop, so each diocese was entitled to determine its own actions. Although Nelson hesitated, women soon formed an increasingly large proportion of those called to the priesthood.
